Finding that Word of the Year

It's the time of year to start all that nonsense about making resolutions. I don't participate because I know myself well enough to know I won't be keeping them so why bother. It's like when everyone tells me to sign up for a 5K and I'll keep up the practice of trying to run at my age and in my current condition because once I pay for it, I'll do it. Wrong. I don't care if I've paid for it or not the motivation for being a runner is. not. with. me. so I'll pass, but I am enjoying my chair yoga thanks.

Yes, I am lazy but that's not the point

Listen, I am not going to deny I could be considered lazy when it comes to doing things. Anything. All the things. And yes, I recognize that my current condition can be directly related to this lack of motivation to move. Except when it comes to the grandbabies and creating for my Etsy shop. Otherwise, good luck getting me out of the chair. So, I will be saying no to making resolutions again this year. But what about choosing my word of the new year?

Aren't we just setting ourselves up for failure?

I think someone came up with this idea to force us 'nonresolvers' in the world to participate in this annual nonsense. I sort of have the same attitude about making resolutions once a year as I do about showing love on Valentine's Day. If you can't show it year 'round, don't bother. With resolutions, why can't we make those any time during the year should we choose and why do we participate in something that sets us up for failure in the first place? Can we not just be who we are and do what we do? Goodness.

Word of the Year

Back to the word of the year. I fell into the trap and tried to find my word of the year a couple of times and guess what I discovered? I don't pay one bit of attention to that word once the choice is made. They were good words it's just not the way I function. I am not one to make a resolution or choose a word and follow it with changing my life or myself. That's not the way it works for me and knowing people who do make resolutions and choose their annual word I'm pretty sure it doesn't work for a lot of other people either.

I don't need a certain date to inspire me to change something.

This year, I will do the same thing I do every year. I'll decide to do something healthier or something to make me grow as a person and then I'll fall off the wagon and get back on and fall back off and so on. And on. And on. One day, I may actually make some of these changes stick. Then again, maybe not. Here's the thing- when I notice something about me that truly needs to be changed, I change it. I don't need a date or an event or a holiday to set the stage. I see it, I do it. But it has to be something I know deep down needs to be different. I haven't reached that point on some things, I have on others. For example, I hate the way I look and feel when I'm overweight but it hasn't affected my health so it's not a deep down need-to-change-urgently kind of thing. No, I do not plan on waiting until my health is affected, but I will wait until my body says that's enough we're changing and then, change.

And then there's the fact that I never make promises I'm not 100% sure I can keep. Maybe that's the bottom line here.

That's the way it works for me and it's always been that way. So, no resolutions for me and no word for 2018 other than 'back-off' from everyone asking me what my resolutions are or my word is. Ha! I know it wouldn't be the word, 'trendy' because I am not a fan of that word and all it represents but let's not get started on that!

Are Y'all resolutions makers or word pickers? Does it work for you?

I Took A Little Quiz

It's an easy one and it comes with a 21 day challenge and I found it at Commit To You 2015. After taking the quiz, you get your mantra for 2015. So, I took it and I got my mantra.

Yes, I really did. I have such lows sometimes and I have such a difficult time adjusting when the holidays are over that I am making a conscious effort to keep my happy holiday spirit going throughout 2015.(I can't even believe I'm writing 2015. Wow.)

Anyway, my mantra for 2015, as it turns out, is, "You've Got This!" And I find it apropos. I've got this. I can do this. I can keep that happy holiday spirit and lost that weight and be fit and be happy even in a situation that is as far from happy as I hope I ever get.

I know, for a sealed deal fact, that I CAN do everything I need/want to do in order to achieve these things. The real question is-- WILL I?

Nothing else has worked for me in this but I wonder if the desire to be happy runs so strong and deep at this point in time that it will be just what I need to spur me towards success.

I do not make New Year's resolutions. That's not what this is even though the challenge begins on January 1st. It's just a nice little 21 day challenge to see if I really do HAVE THIS, this time.

THIS, we shall see.

It will be the first time I've given it a truly concerted effort.

Have you taken the quiz? Or do you already know your mantra for 2015? OR, are you more of a resolution maker?

I Resolve...

...that I won't be changing quite a few things. I know myself too well. I don't make New Year's resolutions because I don't keep them. But there are things about me that just don't change. And I'm ok with that. SO---

In 2014, I will continue to:

  1. Twist my hair when I'm tired. Or sitting still. Or bored.
  2. Complain about the weather being too hot.
  3. Live here even though I complain about the weather being too hot.
  4. Hate it when people talk on top of each other. And when people interrupt others in the middle of a sentence. Rude. And stupid.
  5. Not understand Snapchat. Or Instagram. Or at least not understand the need for them.
  6. Pick at my cuticles.
  7. Be disgusted by Miley Cyrus. Unless she grows the hell up PDQ. How proud her parents must be (please note that this sentence is dripping with sarcasm).
  8. Be disgusted by those who make excuses for their kid's bad behavior.
  9. Be overweight. IF things go like they usually do. IF not, I'll gladly accept the loss.
  10. Roll my eyes when I read some of the things people post on Facebook. Seriously. NOBODY wants to know that much about another person. Not stuff like that anyway.
  11. Cringe when I hear someone use bad grammar. "If someone had just tooken the time to buckle up." And that was from a highway patrolman. Sheesh.
  12. Give a snort of derision when the news stations talk about the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year's Day out on Sullivan's Island. Yes, it's for a good cause. Yes, people have fun. BUT: There is NOTHING polar bearish about the weather or the water here on New Year's Day with the lowest water temp since 1995, I believe, being 41. Though it may be just cold enough to shake off the negative effects from the previous night's transgressions. LOL
  13. Want to string up child molesters and animal abusers. And do bad things to them. Really bad. And painful.
  14. Want to move to the coast of Maine and live in a lovely cottage there. Or somewhere similar across the pond.
  15. Enjoy every moment I get with the family all together.
  16. Love football.
  17. Use bad language when driving. Or watching football. Or listening to some people talk. Or reading. Or watching the news.
  18. Keep hope alive. If I haven't lost it yet, I'm pretty sure I won't.
  19. Laugh. As much as possible. At anything I can.
  20. Love and appreciate my wonderful friends.
That's my top 20. What's on your list?

Happy New Year, Y'all!
